BLOUNT’S DISEASE (Tibia Vara)
Refers to a growth disorder of the shin bone (tibia) that causes the lower leg to angle inward. Blount’s disease resembles but is very different from bow leg that is common in babies and toddlers. Babies’ legs are naturally bowed, but usually straightens out when child starts walking by age of 2. Blount’s disease will not self-correct over time but worsen if left untreated.
Children who develop severe bowing before the age of 3 may be treated with knee ankle foot orthoses.
