It is a cranial orthosis (non-invasive medical device) prescribed for infants for the purpose of correcting head shape. The cranial orthosis (helmet) is made of an outer hard shell with inner foam lining).
We employ highly precise 3D scanners for safe, accurate & fast capturing of 3D model of your baby’s head in seconds for all visits. During each review, the inner foam will be cautiously molded by an Orthotist. This allows redirection of head growth into the flat spots.
Treatment is most effective in babies between 4 to 8 months old. On average, helmet therapy is usually over a period of 3 to 6 months**, heavily dependent on baby’s age, severity level and wear compliance.
During the initial head shape evaluation, we will acquire 3D imaging of your baby’s head shape with an eye-safe scanning system. The scanning system acquires digital measurement, illustrates where reshaping needs to occur and analyzes the baby’s head shape changes throughout treatment. With the scan, we will be able to determine your baby’s head shape condition in order to provide a clinical recommendation.
**Older babies generally require longer treatment period and expectations managed. Therapy will not be effective once skull growth is complete.
Not all babies require the cranial remoulding therapy.

Can you treat flat head syndrome in older children above 2 years of age?
Over the years of treating babies with flat head syndrome, we have received referrals from doctors as well as enquiries from parents seeking treatment for their children above 2 years of age. Unfortunately, head shape would have been fully formed by age 2 – cranial helmet therapy is no longer a treatment option.
Untreated cranial asymmetries have been linked to developmental delays, visual defects, ear infections, middle ear malfunction, jaw bone changes, learning difficulties and other psychomotor delays. While we need long-term research to support if uncorrected plagiocephaly will affect a child’s neurological development, there is no doubt that cranial asymmetry can have an effect on the child’s social well-being later in life, as his/her head will remain misshapen in adulthood.
What if I leave my baby’s flat head untreated?
Prolonged time spent in car seats, infant carriers and slings may possibly contribute to the flattening of a baby’s head. Reduction of time spent in these devices is recommended. It is also beneficial to encourage regular supervised tummy time and repositioning techniques.
How can I prevent my baby from developing flat head syndrome?
During the initial head shape evaluation, we will acquire 3D imaging of your baby’s head shape with an eye-safe scanning system. The scanning system acquires digital measurement, illustrates where reshaping needs to occur and analyzes the baby’s head shape changes throughout treatment. Also known as deformational or positional plagiocephaly where the head shape resembles a parallelogram from top view. Facial asymmetry might be present (shift in positions of ears, differing sizes of eyes and/or cheeks).
Plagiocephaly
Plagiocephaly
Also known as deformational or positional plagiocephaly where the head shape resembles a parallelogram from top view. Facial asymmetry might be present (shift in positions of ears, differing sizes of eyes and/or cheeks).
Head is abnormally wider than its length. The flattened back of the head is visible from the side view and the head shape resembles a trapezoid from above. Head can be high at the back causing a bulging forehead visible from the side view.
Brachycephaly
Brachycephaly

Combination of plagiocephaly and brachycephaly with facial asymmetry (where ears and eyes might appear misaligned). The head is excessively wider and taller than normal with a sloped forehead.
Asymmetrical Brachycephaly
Asymmetrical Brachycephaly

Characterized by a long and narrow head shape, often due to constant positioning of the baby on one side. Premature babies are particularly prone to this as their skulls are fragile and side-lying positions are used in neonatal intensive care.

Treatment is most effective in babies between 4 to 8 months old. The reason for this is that the bones in the skull are still malleable at this age, and also due to the normalising effect of rapid brain growth during this period. However, after 14 months of age that flat head treatment becomes notably less effective as the bones of the skull begin to harden, growth slows down, and the infant starts to become more aware. Here's the graph showing the relationship between success rate and birth months of babies
