SUCCESS STORY: LEVINSON (4 month old at first consult)
When did you start to notice that your baby has a flat spot/flat head?
We noticed our son’s head was flat and resembles “cone-shape” when he was 2 month old in January 2016.
Were you aware of the flat head syndrome (a.k.a Plagiocephaly)?
As concerned parents, we started reading articles online and found out our son indeed has flat head syndrome, medically known as Plagiocephaly.
Although there are medical reviews that children with flat head condition might generally improve, the word “MIGHT” seemed to us that there are children who grew up with their plagiocephaly untreated. There are also medical arguments on the complications caused by plagiocephaly, but the fact is that our son’s head is asymmetric.
Did you (and where did you) bring your baby for a proper assessment?
After discussion, we decided not to leave things to chance as our son’s facial feature is at stake. In addition, we did not want to bear the remorse feeling for not taking any action if our son ask us about his head shape in future. We did not know who to go to so we went to seek the medical opinion from our paediatrician.
What was the first thing you attempt to do to correct your baby’s head? (for eg, re-positioning)
Our paediatrician referred us to the rehabilitation centre for therapy where we were taught tummy time for our son, but there was no improvement after a month.
We sought a second opinion with KK Hospital and was referred to a specialist at KKH’s Cleft & Craniofacial Department. The specialist was very professional, she did all the necessary checks, including x-ray, and confirmed that our son has plagiocephaly. We expressed our intentions to the doctor and she immediately know who we needed.
After incurring unnecessary cost and time visiting 3 doctors & a physio therapist, we finally found ourselves referred to the right specialist at Orthopaedia.
Susanna Koh attended to us and after all the necessary checks and patiently explaining to us of our son’s condition, she suggested it will be ideal for us to consider the Cranial Remoulding Helmet Therapy.
When you were told about the cranial remoulding helmet therapy as the treatment option for your baby, how did you feel?
Without hesitation, we proceeded with the recommendation, as this had been what we had wanted, in addition to hearing the successful stories of flat head babies at Orthopaedia.
How would you describe the therapy journey?
Just one week into the therapy, we could already see improvement on our son’s condition.
We have completed 3 months of therapy, and the improvement was vast. We are delighted and grateful for the services and assistance that Susanna & her team has provided us.
